Indonesia's Sumatra Island has escaped a tsunami forecast to be similar to the one that killed more than 280-thousand people in 2004.
The region was hit by a series of aftershocks on Thursday following a powerful earthquake that toppled hundreds of buildings‚ killing at least TEN people and injuring many others.
A seismologist with Australia's Central Queensland University says a tsunami was created by the earthquake‚ but it travelled in a southwestern direction AWAY from land.
Indonesian authorities issued a tsunami warning late Thursday before lifting it a few hours later.
The 8.4 magnitude quake was also felt in neighboring Singapore‚ Malaysia and Thailand‚ cutting communications and sparking panic there.
