요약정보
U.S. President George W. Bush has urged North Korea‚ to return to talks on its nuclear ambitions.
Speaking to reporters at the White House‚ Mr. Bush made it clear‚ he would not cancel restrictions placed against some North Korean companies‚ to coax Pyeongyang back to the negotiations.
Lee Jung-hwa reports.
The United States wants North Korea to return to the six-country dialogue table‚ but it will not compromise on financial sanctions imposed on the country for alleged counterfeiting and other illicit activities.
Those are the latest comments from U.S. President George W. Bush as efforts to get North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons program continue to face setbacks.
GEORGE W. BUSH‚ U.S. PRESIDENT: "When somebody's counterfeiting our money‚ we want to stop them from doing that. And so we are aggressively saying to North Korea‚ 'don't counterfeit our money.' And we are working with others to prevent them from illicit acts. Now that's different from economic sanctions."
North Korea has flatly refused to come back to the dialogue table unless Washington lifts financial sanctions.
In September‚ the U.S. Treasury Department labelled a Macau-based bank a primary money-laundering concern and moved further‚ blacklisting eight North Korean companies in connection with the bank.
The U.S. government estimates North Korea pockets up to one billion dollars a year from counterfeiting U.S. currency‚ trafficking illegal drugs and even smuggling contraband cigarettes.
President Bush's stance also counters South Korea's efforts to stimulate North Korean reforms through a policy of engagement.
Earlier this week‚ South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun cautioned Washington against applying pressure on North Korea‚ to topple the regime.
