The U.S. government has stressed that its stance on the historical tensions in Northeast Asia remains the same.
This‚ after U.S. Under Secretary of State Wendy Sherman last week said political leaders should not exploit nationalist feelings and "earn cheap applause by vilifying a former enemy."
The remarks were seen as being directed at South Korea and China who criticize Japan for denying its wartime atrocities.
The State Department said on Monday that Sherman's comments were not directed at any particular leader and they don't signal a change in U.S. policy.
Meanwhile‚ South Korea's First Vice Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yong told lawmakers that the government was taking Sherman's comments very seriously. Reporter : ssung86@arirang.co.kr
