England missed a few chances to score in the first half‚ but the tide turned midway through the second half‚ when Frank Lampard was fouled‚ earning England its free kick.
The 60th-minute goal‚ which brushed the goalkeeper's fingertips‚ was Beckham's first in nearly 15 months‚ and came amid criticism of the 31-year-old midfielder's lack of defense and inability to score.
His goal ended a 13-match scoring drought‚ dating to a World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan in March 2005.
