Addressing a specially convened joint session of parliament on Monday‚ French President Francois Hollande said the country would intensify its military campaign in Syria to root out terrorism. (French) "We are at war against jihadist terrorists who threaten the whole world‚ not only France." Hollande called for a meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss a joint response to terrorism‚ and in the meantime‚ he said he would meet soon with U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin to form a united coalition. Hollande also asked for revisions to the French constitution in order to better allow authorities to deal with modern terrorist threats. He is also seeking to extend the current national state of emergency by three months and rescind the citizenship of French natives who are convicted of terrorism. This‚ as ISIS renewed its threats‚ this time against the United States. The militant group released a new propaganda video‚ in which it said that countries conducting air strikes on Syria would suffer the same fate as France and promised specifically to target Washington‚ D.C. Despite the growing fear in the U.S. about a possible terror attack‚ Obama defended his strategy for the ongoing fight against ISIS. Speaking after a G20 summit in Turkey‚ he expressed confidence in his approach to combating terrorism and handling Syria‚ saying air strikes there by the U.S.-led coalition have effectively taken out key members of the terror group's leadership.
