Korea-Japan relations at an historic low as Tokyo continues denying its historical wrongdoings including its wartime sexual enslavement of Korean women. This has kept the two leaders from holding a summit since both of them took office. Yet‚ in a video message for the same event‚ Prime Minister Abe said he hopes to further improve Japan's ties with Korea‚ calling it one of Japan's most important partners. But on Sunday‚ Abe made an offering at the controversial Yasukuni war shrine‚ raising doubts about his sincerity. The shrine honors millions of Japan's war dead‚ including Class-A war criminals‚ and any action to pay tribute there by the Japanese leadership frustrates Korea. All this comes less than two weeks before Seoul hosts a trilateral summit with Tokyo and Beijing‚ where President Park and Abe are expected to hold their first summit.
