Determining who becomes the next President of the United States isn't as simple as liberal versus conservative. Amid the underlying realities of ethnicity in America‚ the Democrats are getting a competitive edge from a particularly fast-growing group -- Asian-Americans. Although Asian-Americans have relatively little influence on the election numerically‚ they are the fastest growing ethnic group in the U.S‚… accounting for more than 9-million eligible voters in this election cycle‚… up 16 percent from four years ago. Asian-Americans also earn the most money of any major group and have the highest level of education‚… factors traditionally correlated with high voter turnout. Though they represent only about 4-percent of eligible voters‚ their influence in some of the key battleground states is significantly greater than that. In California‚ Asian-Americans make up nearly 15-percent of the electorate; and that's 9-percent in Nevada‚ 7 in New Jersey‚ and six.three percent in New York. But the growing influence of Asian voters doesn't necessarily help the Republican Party. A survey earlier this year by the Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote project found that 61-percent of the Asian-American registered voters held an unfavorable view of Republican Donald Trump‚… while a similar proportion held a favorable view of his rival‚ Democrat Hillary Clinton. Some observers say the Republican Party should be wary of alienating the group as the influence of Asian-Americans is expected to rise in the long-term. A Pew Research Center study shows that in less than half a century‚ Asians will outnumber Hispanics among all new immigrants. Shin Se-min‚ Arirang News. Reporter : ashin@arirang.co.kr
