For the 9th consecutive time since the 1986 Mexican World Cup‚ South Korea's trying to reach football's premium competition. In the draw held Tuesday in Kuala Lumpur‚ 56th-ranked South Korea was paired with 42nd-ranked Iran‚ Uzbekistan‚ China‚ Qatar‚ and Syria in Group A. Group B features Australia‚ Japan‚ Saudi Arabia‚ U.A.E.‚ Iraq and Thailand. The final preliminary round will be held next year‚ from September 1st to the 9th. It is expected that Korea will be contesting with Iran‚ the qualifier with the highest rank among the member countries of the Asian Football Confederation‚ for the first place in Group A. The winner and runner-up of each group will head to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. South Korea's record against Iran so far stands at 9 wins‚ 7 ties‚ and 12 losses which places the Taeguk Warriors in a disadvantageous position. Team Korea will face off Uzbekistan in the third pot. Korea has never lost against the Central Asian country in any of the 12 matches played since the 1994 Hiroshima Asian games.
