US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack urged a speedy ratification of the Korea‚ US free trade agreement.
In a recent phone interview with journalists‚ he said that the Korean market is now the fifth largest for US agricultural exports‚ valued at 3.9 billion US dollars in 2009.
He added that the deal would expand those exports in a wide range of commodities‚ resulting in 1.8 billion dollars in additional sales and create 14-thousand jobs.
The KORUS FTA also recently received a bipartisan endorsement from eight former secretaries of Agriculture including Bob Bergland and John Block.
Meanwhile‚ a group of US Republicans say the Korea‚ US FTA cannot be approved alone and must be ratified together with Washington's trade deals with Colombia and Panama.
