Marking International Women's Day‚ President Lee Myung-bak attended a commissioning ceremony for a group of housewives that aims to serve as a channel for a two-way communication of state affairs between the government and the people.
The group‚ called the "Living Enhancement Housewife Monitor Group‚" is made up of about 10-thousand housewives ranging in age from their 20s to 50s who are eager to participate in state affairs‚ promote voluntary work‚ as well as laudable services for the community.
Starting this month and until the year 2013‚ the appointed members will propose ideas on gender‚ education‚ welfare and culture that can be implemented in government policies based on what they pick up from monitoring people's daily lives.
Statistics show that out of some 24-thousand suggestions submitted by the organization last year more than 250 of them have been carried out.
They are also expected to play a leading role in helping realize a fair society by actively promoting activities to support those in need including one-on-one mentoring sessions with multicultural families and North Korean defectors‚ fund-raising campaigns for the poor‚ and creating job opportunities for the unemployed.
