Last month‚ a multicultural school opened up in Ansan‚ Gyeonggi Province.
This is a temporary space before the actual school building opens in 2012.
An official from the Multicultural School in Korea says over 80 percent of children from migrant workers are not enrolled in school and that students from multicultural families frequently drop out.
[Interview : Park Chun-ung‚ Executive director
Multicultural School in Korea] "Some think we might be segregating the children by putting them into multicultural schools. But this is definitely not the case. In fact‚ we need special schools and classes because the kids often find it hard to adjust at Korean public schools."
The most pressing problem they face is learning Korean.
Since most non-Korean parents do not speak the language fluently‚ they find it hard to help their kids with their school work.
[Interview : Amabella Lee‚ Ansan resident] "I need‚ as a parent‚ I need more Korean education for my kid."
The Multicultural School is hoping to bridge the language gap and provide students with a better opportunity for their future.
Meanwhile‚ as a supplementary measure‚ Gyeonggi Province has been running an after-school home-tutoring program since 2009 targeting multicultural children between the ages of three and ten.
When Ms. Zhao‚ originally from China‚ moved here a year ago with her Korean husband‚ her ten-year-old son could not speak Korean fluently.
[Interview : Zhao Wei Jiao‚ Suwon resident] "When my son first came to Korea‚ he had a hard time reading and writing Korean. But now‚ after taking part in this program for a year‚ his Korean has improved a lot and his writing is much better."
Sponsored by Gyeonggi Province and a private education publisher‚ 2-thousand children are participating in this program this year with Monday marking the start of the 2011 curriculum.
[Interview : Kim Han-ul‚ chkim@arirang.co.kr
] "Over 180-thousand immigrant spouses currently live in Korea and both the provincial government and private groups are making efforts to bolster education for the multicultural children.
