It looks like the anti-whaling groups have won this time.
Japan has announced that its whaling vessel will prematurely wrap up its annual whale hunt which was scheduled to continue into early next month.
The announcement comes following weeks of harassment by the American based anti-whaling group‚ Sea Shepherd Conservation Society which made it difficult for the whaling missions to continue.
Over the past few weeks‚ members of Sea Shepherd have been throwing old‚ rotting butter‚ red paint and smoke bombs onto the vessel to disturb the whale hunt. .
[Interview : Yukio Edano‚ Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary ] "It has become difficult to secure the crew's safety. We had no choice but to cut the mission short."
Commercial whaling has been prohibited worldwide since 1986..
However‚ Japan has continued to catch whales for "whale research" as research is currently the only approved method of whaling.
Those opposed to the country's whaling practices claim that whale meat is later sold in markets which means it's not research‚ but commercial whaling.
This marks the first time that Japan has decided to call off its hunt early.
The anti-whaling community is hopeful that this could lead to a permanent end to the practice.
But.for now the Japanese government doesn't seem to have a strong enough incentive to give up whaling altogether.
Sea Shepherd‚ meanwhile‚ has introduced a new high-speed ship to its fleet after one of their boats sank following a collision with a Japanese whaling ship last year.
