South Korea and the United States are set to conduct their annual joint military exercises later this month which are focused on defending South Korea from potential enemy attacks.
The Korea-US Combined Forces Command in Seoul said on Tuesday that the Key Resolve‚ a command-post drill using computer-based simulations‚ will be conducted for 11 days from February 28th to March 10th.
The Foal Eagle training‚ which focuses on field exercises‚ will also begin on the 28th of this month‚ but will be carried out until April 30th.
The upcoming exercises will involve about 200-thousand South Korean troops and nearly 13-thousand US soldiers.
Although military officials have refused to comment on the size and details of this year's drill‚ some newspapers here in Korea are suggesting that a US supercarrier may take part and that joint training focused on the search and destroy of North Korean weapons of mass destruction will also take place.
Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff‚ however‚ said that this year's training exercises will be focused on tactics to prevent North Korean provocations such as the torpedo attack of the Cheonan warship and the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island last year.
The ministry added that during the drill the two allies will also prepare for all possible scenarios‚ including all-out war.
North Korea‚ meanwhile‚ has heavily criticized the drill calling it a rehearsal for nuclear war.
