Two days of unprecedented heavy rainfall in northwestern Turkey fueled flash floods in Istanbul killing at least 31 people.
Dozens of homes and workplaces were swamped and highways were transformed into raging rivers as nearby streams burst through their dams.
In what marks the worst rainstorm in nearly 80 years Turkey's largest city with 14 million inhabitants went underwater overturning trucks‚ buses‚ and cars and leaving debris scattered everywhere.
[Interview : Nuri Bitken‚ Truck garage guard] "We heard a crashing sound and then saw the water coming down carrying cars and debris. Some‚ asleep in the trucks‚ didn't make it and their bodies had to be retrieved by boats."
Hundreds of thousands of rescue workers in boats used planks and ladders to help those stranded in the raging water while military helicopters were in operation‚ rescuing motorists marooned in trees and citizens desperately crying for rescue.
[Interview : Kami Coskun] "My friend got stuck in the truck after the water rose all at once. The vehicle stopped working after filling with water. We rescued him with a winch."
In the industrial district of Ikitelli one of the areas hit hardest the water rose up to two meters at one point.
Thousands of people waded chest-high through submerged highways and scampered for belongings in the wreckage.
Experts estimate damages from the flood could range anywhere from 80 million US dollars to more than 100 million and are citing the nation's impaired city planning and poor infrastructure for the devastating destruction.
