At the Asia-Pacific Regulators' Roundtable that took place in Kuala Lumpur‚ Malaysia‚ you pledged to support Korean broadcast content to reach out to more countries.
Could you tell us more about your pledgeand the most important topics covered at the meeting?
I attended the 5th ITU Asia-Pacific Regulators' Roundtable in Kuala Lumpur‚ Malaysia‚ on August 24 and 25 where regulators of 38 countries in the Asia-Pacific region gathered to share recent trends in broadcasting and telecommunications‚ and discuss an international coordination plan.
I gave a presentation on the topic of "OTT in the Telecommunication/ICT Ecosystem‚" and shared new issues related to the rapidly changing OTT environment‚ and suggested the formation of an Asia-Pacific framework as a solution.
The participating regulators also understood the need for cooperation between governments with the rise of OTT and agreed that continued international coordination is needed.
In addition‚ the second "Korea-ASEAN Broadcasting Showcase" was held in connection with the Regulators' Roundtable to promote broadcasting content exchanges between Korea and ASEAN‚ introducing 87 pieces of content from 19 Korean broadcasters and 9 ASEAN countries to the Roundtable participants and other visitors.
Also‚ the KCC participated in the 'KL Converge‚' an event hosted by the Malaysian government showing digital content. Various Korean companies in the broadcasting‚ game and entertainment industries presented their content at the event and the responses were very positive. I believe the word 'Korean' adds a connotation of being 'premium' in Malaysia.
Chinese investors are keen to pour money into Korean media content.
In some cases‚ we hear that China is even involved in their production.
What's your take on this?
The cooperation between Korea and China in the broadcasting sector is very active. Plus‚ they're achieving quality results from a combination of the huge market and capital; interesting subject matters in China; production techniques; and Korea's creative ideas.
In particular‚ as the viewers of the two countries share a lot in common in terms of culture and sentiment‚ more active co-production and exchanges in diverse fields are expected.
The Korea-China FTA will also help with co-production efforts between the two countries.
Problems arising in the process of broadcasting exchanges will be dealt with through cooperation with the Chinese government and our organization's Chinese counterpart.
The two countries will also make joint efforts to maximize each other’s capability and support each other.
Also‚ if co-produced programs bring out good results in the global market‚ I believe this region could be a representative content production base just like Hollywood.
The Korea Communications Commission has also signed an agreement with China to boost exchanges in broadcast programs.
What do you expect from the deal?
Broadcasting Policy Roundtable and cross-government cooperation system will continue for more active exchanges and cooperation in broadcasting content.
The two countries agreed to set up a research team and working-level channel to discuss how to promote exchanges in the overall broadcasting field of the two countries.
