One of the most well-known figures in Korean literature is legendary poet Ko Un‚. who has been writing for nearly 60 years.
Sixty of his approximately 160 books of poetry have been translated into 16 languages‚ and he has been nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature several times during the last decade.
Although Ko represents one of the country's best chances for the prize‚ he is one of many talented writers working in Korea today‚ and experts say they are optimistic about the outlook for Korean literature.

Since the 1990s‚ works by contemporary Korean authors like Kim Young-ha and Han Kang have found success overseas.
The most recent success to date has been Shin Kyung-sook's best-seller "Please Look After Mom‚" which became a literary sensation worldwide‚ after having been translated into more than 30 languages.
Still‚ quality translation is just one of the many tasks facing the literary community in Korea.
Serious efforts to translate the country's literary works largely began about three decades ago.
With projects by both public and private organizations‚ like the Korean Literature Translation Institute‚ the International Communication Foundation and the Daesan Foundation‚. about 15-hundred Korean literary works are estimated to have been translated into over 30 languages in more than 50 countries so far.
But this figure is relatively small compared to the number of works of Japanese literature in translation -- which number around 20-thousand according to some estimates.

Other obstacles remain for Korean literature to reach a broad global readhership‚ such as strengthening relationships with publishing houses and expanding the connection to global literary circles.
The most important‚ however‚ is for the writers themselves.
They must have the support they need to create works that resonate with readers around the world.
