Lawmakers here in Korea have overturned a ban on using Twitter and other social network services as campaign tools during elections.
The Constitutional Court ruled in a six-to-two vote Thursday that article 93‚ clause one of the election law prohibiting the use of SNS sites for campaigning is in violation of the Constitution and an infringement on freedom of expression.
Thursday ruling opens up the network to politicians who want to get their campaign messages out to tweeting citizens.
The general elections slated for April 2012 will mark the first time in Korean history that candidates will be able to reach out to voters electronically‚ up until the day of elections.
The court said by banning internet communication prior to an election‚ the law was effectively shutting down criticism and public discourse‚ which are essential to the electoral system.
