Korea is currently admist the holiday spirit like many other countries around the globe‚ as another year is gradually coming to an end
Holiday season may be the coldest one of the year but it's also the warmest one as it spreads the spirit of giving and sharing.
Right. This is also when the salvation army red kettle appears on the scene. ringing bells awakening the whole nation to the importance of giving.
And today we have our producer Park Hee-ju joining us now in the studio to tell us how to be more active givers. Hello there.
[Reporter : ] Hi guys. Do you guys donate often around this time of the year You know I feel bad because there are many times I just walked past the red kettle or those donation boxes placed in front of the cashier of coffee shops or restaurants. I try but it hasn't quite become a habit yet.
But you know recently‚ a man in his 60s made major headlines as he put in 110 million won‚ or about 96‚000 US Dollars into a salvation army kettle set up in the city. What a nice surprise‚ right[Reporter : ] It really was. It also made me look back on myself and how indifferent I have been for the past years in terms of giving and sharing.
//I'm sure there are many of you out there who find themselves pressured to give out a big amount of money to donate or don't even know how to start. Well‚ it doesn't always have to be a big amount of money or it doesn't even have to be money‚ for that matter. Today I want to take you to some places where you can donate in a new‚ different way to make donation a lot more fun and accessible. Let's take a look.
[Interview : PD] "Do you donate often[Interview : Seoul resident] "I do. Although I get a bit annoyed. And I don’t think about it that much."
[Interview : Seoul resident] "I don’t know very well how to give donations. But I must confess‚ I don’t even think it’s that import"ant.
According to a survey by Statistics Korea released in November‚ only one in three Koreans has given a donation.
How about you[Interview : Kim Woon-wang‚ Chief of Communications Office
Community Chest of Korea] "Compared to the U.S.‚ individual donations are still among the highest‚ reaching up to 75% of all donations. On the other hand‚ Korea has a high rate of corporate donations."
Most people donated through charities or through item donations to religious organizations.
But the trends are changing. New and fun ways to donate are being created left and right.
Ji-hye is a smartphone user like many other people in Korea. She uses her phone for a very special purpose.
[Interview : PD] "Are you playing a game during work hours[Interview : Gil Ji-hye‚ Office worker] "I am‚ but it's for a good cause."

The smartphone game allows users to sponsor an actual tree to be planted in Korea‚ Mongolia‚ and Indonesia by "planting" a virtual tree on their phone.
[Interview : Gil Ji-hye‚ Office worker] "Wow."
[Interview : PD] "How does it feel to see the pictures[Interview : ] "So people can give water or pick fruit by clicking."
They use money from advertising inside their game to fund actual tree planting projects.

Tree Planet] "I used to make documentaries about the environment. Documentaries can raise awareness and educate people‚ but it's hard to induce people to take real action. I decided to create a business that helped people actually plant trees‚ and chose to design a smartphone and Facebook game to make it fun and trendy."
The development of IT technology is fueling change in donation culture.

Tree Planet] "The culture of donation is going to continue to move to the online platform. Our customers range from six-year-olds to adults in their fifties. Little kids don't have credit cards‚ but they can play games."
