When the ruling Grand National Party railroaded the Korea-US FTA ratification bill through the National Assembly last month‚ all committee sessions came to a halt after the main opposition Democratic Party refused to attend any committee sessions‚ making it impossible to pass next year's budget bill within the regular assembly session.
But it now looks like the two parties will try to cooperate in approving the bill before the end of the year.
At a joint press conference Thursday‚ spokesmen for the two parties said that‚ their floor leaders have agreed‚ to hold their first provisional session next Monday.
Party representatives added that more extra sessions aimed at finalizing appointments for two Supreme Court justices as well as revising protection policies for local industries that are to be affected by the KORUS FTA‚ could take place following Monday's meeting‚ if needed.
Their agreement comes after National Assembly Speaker Park Hee-tae‚ earlier in the day‚ urged all lawmakers to fulfill their lawful duties and resume standing committee sessions to process any pending issues.
