We begin this half hour with exciting news for Koreans.
Just this Tuesday‚ Korea welcomed home priceless‚ ancient texts that Japan had looted during its colonial rule over the Korean Peninsula.
That's right. A total of 12-hundred ancient texts were returned from Japan‚ fulfilling a pledge made at a meeting between Korean President Lee Myung-bak and then Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan in November of last year.
Arirang News correspondent Kim Yeon-ji reported on the arrival of these ancient texts in Korea on Tuesday‚ and she joins us in the studio today to tell us about the day's event and the significance it holds in contemporary Korean history.

December 6th was indeed an exciting day for Korea‚ as more than a thousand Korean ancient texts returned safely to their home country nearly 100 years after they were illegally taken to Japan.
One-hundred-and-seven of the returned books are believed to be one-of-a-kind artifacts‚ the only ones to exist in Korea‚ meaning Koreans would not have had a chance to learn about their existence or their value had they not been returned.
And I heard that many non-governmental organizations and South Korean lawmakers worked tirelessly over the years to make this possible.
[Reporter : yeonji] That's right.
First‚ Korea's Cultural Heritage Administration played an important role surveying the Imperial Household Agency within Japan's royal palace‚ where the books had been kept‚ and cataloging them.
Then‚ non-governmental groups‚ like the Committee on the Return of Joseon Dynasty Uigwe‚ spearheaded a concerted movement calling on Japan to return the Korean texts.
And knowing that active involvement by the government could potentially backfire‚ the committee was consisted of Buddhist monks and scholars.
The group urged South Korean lawmakers to place the matter at the top of their agenda and then asked North Korean monks to jointly request Japan to return the relics.
The committee members visited Japan numerous times to meet with Japanese lawmakers and politicians and lead the negotiations there.
But of course‚ we should also remember and thank the Japanese intellectuals and politicians who actually returned the ancient texts.
With that said‚ let's now check out the reception ceremony held on Tuesday celebrating the arrival of the books from Japan.
Twelve-hundred Korean ancient texts looted by Japan returned to their homeland on Tuesday nearly 100 years after they were taken from Korea.
These are books from the Joseon Dynasty which ruled over a united Korean Peninsula from 1392 through the Japanese Occupation of Korea in 1910.
The books include 167 volumes of "Uigwe‚" which is a collection of documents that chronicles and illustrates royal protocols used during the Joseon Dynasty in weddings‚ funerals‚ banquets and other royal events.
Because of their excellent visual illustrations and their chronicling of the culture of the Joseon aristocracy‚ Uigwe was included on the UNESCO Memory of the World list in 2007.
Also returned were 99 volumes of "Jeungbo Munheonbigo‚" a kind of encyclopedia ‚ one volume of "Daejeon Hoetong"‚ a law book ‚ and 938 volumes of Gyujanggak Royal Library texts that the first Japanese Resident-General in Korea‚ Hibobumi Ito‚ illegally took to Japan.
The books had been stored at Japan's Imperial Household Agency for years.
On Tuesday‚ a solemn reception ceremony was held to commemorate the homecoming of these invaluable historical records.
After the first of two planes carrying the relics landed at Incheon International Airport Tuesday afternoon‚ performers of Korea's traditional instrument orchestra and the traditional honor guard drill team welcomed the books at the airport's freight terminal.
