A day after three of five elected Supreme Council members resigned in protest against his management of the ruling Grand National Party‚ party chairman Hong Jun-pyo held a press conference on Thursday to announce his plans to overhaul the party.

Grand National Party] "We will re-evaluate all GNP members on the basis of their activities as lawmakers over the past four years‚ regardless of seniority. Only those who have contributed to the party will receive nominations for the general elections next year."
Hong's press conference was seen as a last ditch effort to steer the ruling party toward reform amid growing concerns that the GNP will lose its majority standing in the National Assembly next April.
Chairman Hong also opened a door for other influential party members‚ such as Park Geun-hye‚ to lead the party.
Current rules require presidential hopefuls to quit their party positions 18 months before the date of the election.

Grand National Party] "We will also amend the party's constitution to permit potential presidential candidates to assume leadership posts in the party. For this‚ we will set up a committee for party transformation soon."
But a number of reform-minded GNP lawmakers have said publicly that Hong's reform measures are insufficient and that he should resign from the party's top post.
