The ruling Grand National Party which has been on shaky grounds since it lost the Seoul mayoral race in October is in a state of turmoil after three members of the party leadership resigned on Wednesday.
One of the five elected supreme council members Yoo Seong-min held a press briefing to announce his resignation.
Yoo said the GNP's passive stance about allegations of an aide to a party's lawmaker being involved in the cyber attacks on the day of the October by-elections was the reason he decided to resign.

Grand National Party] "I am resigning from my position as a member of the supreme council. I am also taking responsibility as one of the party leaders for having failed to save our party from losing the people's faith. I want to sincerely apologize to the Korean people."
Fellow council members Won Hee-ryong and Nam Kyung-pil followed suit‚ heavily criticizing the party's chairperson Hong Jun-pyo saying that the GNP has a very grim future under Hong's leadership.

Grand National Party] "To build a strong conservative party that will become one of the pillars of Korean politics and society‚ we need to breakup the GNP. It should be a complete disbandment."
However‚ Hong refused to step down from the top post for the time being‚ saying that the ruling party must tend to the country's administration‚ such as approving next year's national budget.
The party leader added that he will not cling to the top post‚ and that if the majority of the party decides that he must step down‚ he will do so.

Grand National Party] "We have a plan to re-create‚ if you will‚ the GNP. We have prepared the plan right after the October by-elections. But the reason we have not mentioned the comprehensive overhaul to revamp our party is because the time is not right for such discussions."
In the afternoon‚ a party meeting for all GNP lawmakers was held at the National Assembly.
But instead of discussing the issue of reforming the country's tax code‚ the lawmakers continued to share opinions on the party's state of affairs.
