The winter strawberry harvest has begun.

This farm benefits a lot by using aboveground cultivation.
Above ground cultivation is when crops are raised to waist height.
Artificial soil made of coconut peel is spread in the Styrofoam containers for nutriculture.
This improves water permeability‚ heat retaining capacity‚ and increases yields by 20% over ordinary cultivation methods.
Above ground cultivation costs 70‚000 won per 3.3㎡ to operate but the income generated is 90‚000 won‚ which makes it worthwhile.

Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Services] "Aboveground cultivation contributes to a 120 to 130 percent gain in yield compared to growing the strawberries in the soil. I hope more farmers will adopt this method."
60 Jeju farms currently produce strawberries with about 270 tons of berries being consumed on the island yearly. However‚ the island’s self-sufficiency rate is only 50%.
The Jeju Agricultural Research & Extension Services plans to raise the rate up to 60% by making the western part of the island‚ with its plentiful sunshine‚ the main strawberry production area.
