요약정보
More and more children around the world are being raised not by their parents‚ but instead by their grandparents due to a vareity of reasons.
Grandparent care has become a prevalent phenomenon in recent years‚ and Korea is no exception.
According to Statistics Korea‚.. the nation's population of children living with grandparents has growb by more than 65 percent in just ten years‚ with divorce by the children's parents being the most frequent cause.
[Reporter : Han Da-eun
daeun@arirang.co.kr ] "With the rising number of children under grandparent care in Korea‚ a very special charity event took place here at Wangsimni Square‚ to give such children some financial and emotional support."
The event‚ co-hosted by Arirang TV‚ KTV and KFN‚… was held on Thursday to raise funds for children living without biological parents‚… as well as to raise public awareness on the growing trend of such families.
Despite freezing temperatures‚ a large number of citizens participated to lend a helping hand.
South Korean Culture Minister Choe Kwang-shik was also present to show his support.
[Interview : Choe Kwang-shik‚ Culture minister ] "It was very heart warming to see that a small contribution can become a warm fireplace to these people during the cold‚ harsh winter."
[Interview : Sohn Jie-ae‚ President and CEO
Arirang TV & Radio ] "I think what we are doing is what really_x001b_ keeps us warm and this is exactly the season where we need to look at people that need our help. I think it is very‚ very meaningful that Arirang is a part of this event."
The number of parentless children is rising quickly‚ but not many people understand the hardships they face.
Since most of them are classified as children with parents in terms of the law‚ they're not subject to government aid in healthcare or education.
And because of rigid qualification standards‚ less than 10 percent of such children are said to be receiving the benefits of government funds intended for foster homes‚ while others have no choice but to rely heavily on the meager income of their grandparents.
[Interview : Baek Seung-yoon‚ Seoul resident ] "I never realized how hard it is to live depending solely on grandparents. It feels great to be a little bit of help."
There are countless groups for the underprivileged in Korean society‚ but special attention is now being drawn to the growing number of children deprived of the love and care that they so rightly deserve.
