The United States and Japan together have called on North Korea to stop its provocations and show efforts to denuclearize for the resumption of the six-party nuclear dismantlement talks.

After meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara on Thursday‚ the US Secretary of State also pointed out chief nuclear negotiator Stephen Bosworth's visit to Tokyo‚ saying that the two allies are in close consultation on matters involving North Korea.
Japan's top diplomat‚ who spoke positively on returning to the multilateral dialogue‚ also placed weight on the need to improve strained inter-Korean relations before any talks.
[Interview : Seiji Maehara‚ Japanese Foreign Minister] "I believe what is important is for the DPRK to take concrete actions with sincerity‚ with good faith and we believe in the first place that inter-Korean dialogue should take place."
The US State Department‚ meanwhile‚ gave a brief update on special envoy Bosworth's trip to East Asia‚ saying he had "useful consultations" with Chinese officials on ways to make progress on North Korea's nuclear issue.
Now that tour will be followed by US Defense Secretary Robert Gates and his delegation who'll be in Beijing next week to discuss military cooperation between the US and China amid the Kim Jong-il regime's belligerence and defiant pursuit of nuclear weapons.
