Korean President Lee Myung-bak announced that the welfare budget for next year will mark its largest amount ever and that it is safe to say Korea has become a mature welfare state.
During a briefing session on Wednesday by the Ministry of Health and Welfare President Lee stated that nearly 30 percent of the national budget will be injected into the welfare sector next year while highlighting the need for improvement.
[Interview : President Lee Myung-bak] "Much thought should be put into establishing a welfare system that suits Korea. There are still many dead zones in the welfare sector‚ despite the budget increase."
"한국적 복지체제를 만들어 나가야 된다는 그런 관점에서도 많은 고민을 해야되지 않겠냐 이렇게 생각이 들고 또 우리가 복지 예산이 많이 늘어남에도 불구하고 복지 사각지대가 아직도 많습니다."
President Lee added that up to 70 percent of childcare expenses will be provided for low and middle income families while tuition for students enrolling in technical high schools and those from lower-income families will be fully covered by the government.
Meanwhile earlier in the day the Korean leader said making sure people know the country will take full care of those who have made sacrifices for the nation will have a positive influence on the youth.
During another briefing session by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs President Lee stated that boosting the awareness of patriots and veterans' affairs could help strengthen the people's sense of national security.
He spoke of North Korea's provocations this year including the torpedo assault on a South Korean warship in late March and the recent artillery attack on Yeonpyeong Island‚ saying these incidents have made South Koreans affirm their love for their country and the zeal to defend the nation.
He also called on the government to seek out those who forfeited their lives for the country especially the remains of fallen soldiers from the Korean War.
