요약정보
Korean President Lee Myung-bak held a bilateral summit with visiting Peruvian President Alan Garcia Monday and attended the initialing ceremony of a free trade pact between the two countries a procedure taken prior to the actual signing of the agreement.
During an hour-long one-on-one the two leaders agreed to work towards an early effectuation of the FTA struck in late August in Lima after 17 months of negotiations for what will be Korea's second trade pact with a Latin American country after Chile.
Under the deal Peru will abolish tariffs on major industrial products from Korea including cars and electronics products while removing tariffs on Peruvian farm products such as coffee and squid within the next 10 years.
Experts say trade between Korea and Peru reached some 1.6 billion dollars last year and the free trade deal is estimated to boost commerce between the two sides to 7 billion US dollars by 2016.
President Lee expressed hope that the pending FTA would contribute to bolstering the welfare of the people in both nations and called on his Peruvian counterpart for closer collaboration with Korea on energy‚ resource development and infrastructure construction.
The Peruvian leader meanwhile‚ requested more investment from Korean companies in Peru's gas development projects and for continued expansion of joint-projects that could benefit both countries.
On the occasion of their summit they also signed memorandums of understanding on commitment to step up cooperation in science-technology and environmental protection sectors.
