Lithium is a soft‚ silver-white metal which contains several industrial applications from alloys used in aircrafts to lithium batteries and which also supports fuel-efficient cars and electric vehicles.
Lithium is becoming more and more important these days particularly in the form of small-sized lithium-ion batteries which provide power for laptop computers and mobile phones.
More than 40 percent of the world's reserves of this limited resource lie in Bolivia in the Salar de Uyuni salt desert.
And Korea looks like it is ahead of the pack among its competitors and is about to seal a deal with Bolivia in order to work together on a lithium development project.
An official at Seoul's foreign ministry has indicated that President Lee Myung-bak will likely discuss sharing Korea's lithium-related technologies and seal the pact with the South American nation during Bolivian President Evo Morales' three-day visit to Seoul this month.
The agreement would allow Korea to position itself ahead of its rivals‚ including Japan‚ China‚ France and Brazil‚ which also seek to secure a deal and participate in the project.
Meanwhile‚ the foreign ministry said on Tuesday the 16-member Korean inspection team has been released after being detained by locals a day earlier in Salar de Uyuni.
Local residents have strongly resisted against exploration of the salt flats as the region still remains quite poor.
