Conservative former defense minister Juan Manuel Santos has won Colombia's presidential election after securing an overwhelming majority victory against his rival‚ former Bogota Mayor Antanas Mockus.
"I greet the new president of the Colombians‚ Dr. Juan Manuel Santos Calderon‚ to say that we are very happy that the country put in his hands the hope of new generations."
According to the National Electoral Council‚ Santos took 69 percent of the ballot in the runoff election which was held on Sunday to his challenger's 28 percent.
The president-elect pledged to continue his predecessor‚ President Alvaro Uribe's policies to fight against drug trafficking‚ crime and insurgency as well as to maintain close ties with the United States which provides hundreds of millions of dollars in security aid each year.
Observers say his tough policies against rebel guerrillas during his term as defense minister have led him to succeed two-term President Uribe in this year's election.
And experts forecast that Santos will not only be keeping his pledge to improve security in the nation‚ but also carry out various economic policies to solve the budget deficit‚ poverty and high unemployment rate.

Experts also say Santos is expected to accept pledges put forth by his rival Mockus that are focused on high quality education and welfare in order to win back public sentiment that was torn due to the election.
