Latin American nations are coming into the spotlight as one of Korea's most important trading partners.
Rich in natural resources‚ Central and South American countries are Seoul's main sources of mineral goods as well as reliable export destinations of automobiles and electronic products.
And in line with the Korean government's efforts to improve economic relations with the region‚ Korea and Colombia are holding their third round of free trade negotiations in Seoul this week.

Colombia's Ministry of Trade‚ Industry and Tourism] "We want to focus very much into the Asia-Pacific region‚ as we know that it will be beneficial for the country to expand trade in services and in goods and to receive more investment from Korea and some other Asian countries."
Peru is another Spanish-speaking nation Korea is having trade negotiations with.
Four sessions of talks have been held until today with Peruvian Trade and Tourism Minister Martin Perez saying that he hopes negotiations which kicked off this past March to be concluded by September.
Meanwhile‚ joint research is underway to launch a trade accord between Korea and Mercosur‚ comprised of Argentina‚ Brazil‚ Paraguay and Uruguay‚ while this year marks the sixth anniversary of an effective FTA between Korea and Chile.
For Latin American countries‚ having a trade accord with Korea can draw more investment to their economies as well as serve as an opportunity to export more of their low-priced yet quality agriculture goods.

Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade] "We try to introduce strong disciplines of protecting our investors in Latin American countries. With regards to market access negotiations‚ we know that the products of interest of those countries are agricultural products. On the other hand‚ those products are very sensitive to Korea‚ so that is a very big task of how to reconcile those differences."
And hopes are high that President Lee Myung-bak's visit to Mexico in late June will also lay the groundwork for a resumption of stalled free trade talks between the two countries since 2008 as the two sides failed to narrow down their differences in the agriculture and manufacturing sectors.
