Friday morning a coffin carrying the body of former president Roh Moo-hyun left his hometown of Bongha under an air of solemnity.
The atmosphere of the town was heavy with sadness as the funeral procession started with the placement of the Korean national flag on Roh's coffin at 5 a.m.
Carried by the honor guards the coffin left the town hall where Roh's body has been laid out for a week since he passed away.
As soon as his coffin appeared in public thousands of the mourners in attendance wept openly.
Roh's family followed his coffin in silent sorrow as Roh's wife was helped forward by her daughter step after heavy step.
They paid their final respects to Roh in front of his portrait as Roh's first son Roh Geon-ho poured out liquor for his father in the Korean tradition.
Roh's portrait then was taken to his residence in order for Roh to see his home one last time.
The coffin was moved to a car where Roh's former driver who had been driving him for over 20 years waited to take him to Seoul.
Mourners flew yellow paper planes at the automobile as it pulled out of town very slowly at around 6 a.m through the thousands of mourners massed around it.
Many of the attendees who witnessed the scene had stayed overnight beside the town hall in order to be there to watch Roh's final departure.

Throughout the night‚ they sang a song Roh once enjoyed singing and watched a video clips of Roh on a big screen set up outside.
Some wept for not being able to see him alive only coming close to the man after his death.
Some plan to stay in the town until Roh's ashes return from cremation to be placed in Jeongtowon temple later at night.
