요약정보
Chungnam National University in Daejeon.
Albrecht Huber‚ who has been teaching German here for 12 years‚ is now a veteran professor.
Having majored in Anthropology in Germany‚ he came to Korea in 1997 to join the faculty at the Department of German Language and Literature at Chungnam National University.
[Interview : Shin Hwan-hui
Chungnam Natl. Univ. student] "He enjoys a wide variety of Korean culture‚ but I did not know that he could draw so well!"
Although he is a German professor by trade‚ Albrecht Huber freely admits that his real passion lies in Eastern art.
This is Albrecht's first individual exhibit in Korea.
[Interview : Albrecht Huber‚ Professor
Chungnam National University] "I know that there has been a tradition of painting landscapes in Korea. I wanted to provide a different perspective to the viewers."
Sumukhwa‚ or ink and wash painting‚ is an Eastern art form that seeks to recreate the world using two simple ingredients; black ink and a brush.
In the Eastern world‚ learned men were required to be at ease with expressing their views through poetry‚ calligraphy‚ and painting.
Albrecht Huber's work incorporates this aspect of Eastern art‚ but also captures his unique reinterpretation of Eastern art.
This exhibition features 26 black and white pieces that depict the Korean landscape and Korean reinterpretations of Western mythology.
[Interview : Yun Ga-hwa‚ Exhibition visitor] "There is a lot of blank space in Korean landscapes‚ but not here."
[Interview : Gung Seong-yong‚ Exhibition visitor] "It really captures the essence of Eastern paintings. I find it hard to believe it was drawn by a German person."
Albrecht Huber and his wife visit a Caligraphy store in downtown Daejeon.
His wife and this store are the two biggest driving forces that allowed Albrecht to prepare his own exhibit.
Albrecht has been painting with traditional ink and brush even back in Germany.
However‚ since he was unable to get the proper canvases‚ he was unable to express the shades and thickness of the ink‚ an important part of Eastern painting.
All this changed since Albrecht discovered this store.
Albrecht is pleased to have found quality art supplies for his painting.
Albrecht is most serious when working on his Sumukhwa.
In order to complete a delicate and detailed painting‚ he must stay focused at all times.
What are Albrecht's future plans[Interview : Albrecht Huber‚ Professor
Chungnam National University] "I want to learn more about classical literature. It would help me to better capture the essence of Eastern philosophy."
Albrecht Huber‚ a Western scholar‚ has taken on the Eastern art of Sumukhwa‚ attempting to understand the essence of Eastern art and reinterpret it through his own perspective.
