요약정보
The Lee Myung-bak administration has moved a step closer toward easing regulations for those seeking to gain Korean citizenship.
At the monthly National Competitiveness Council meeting held on Thursday the council decided it would seek to end a five-year residency requirement that must be met before a person can obtain citizenship.
Also‚ for ethnic Koreans overseas the age limits on choosing between foreign and Korean citizenship would be slightly extended.
Though the changes are limited in scope the idea is to begin attracting more talented people to Korea and encouraging those who are already here Korean citizens included from leaving.
The measure is also in line with the administration's goal of creating a more multicultural society.
Though Korea has a foreign population of about 1 million the notion of gaining citizenship here is still relatively novel.
Also discussed at the meeting was a measure to expand online administrative services.
The council plans to expand the number of tasks people can perform at government websites to about 4-thousand by 2010 up from the current 1-thousand.
The council expects the expansion would reduce costs by up to 6-hundred billion won or 450-million US dollars per year.
Meanwhile at a weekly meeting for Emergency Economic Measures which was also held Thursday the government shared its aid plan for Korean automakers.
Through the end of this year the government will give new car buyers who are replacing vehicles registered before the year 2000 a tax deduction of up to 70 percent.
Presidential Spokesman Lee Dong-kwan said the aid plan abides by World Trade Organization agreements.
