The city of Seoul was all ears today to the voices of members of the city's expatriate community.
From visas to traffic congestion‚ city officials were busy addressing the concerns of foreigners living and working in the capital.
Sok Jongwook reports on what was discussed.
Seoul city hall held its annual town meeting with experts from various fields and the foreign community.
The 8th town meeting was held with close to 160 foreigners from various cultural backgrounds.
''As more and more foreigners call Seoul home‚ city hall has invited the foreign community to see what it can do to better their lives in the capital.''
Seoul puts the number of foreign nationals living in the city at 175-thousand with Chinese making up more than half with close to 120-thousand followed by Americans at a little over 11-thousand.
The meeting began with addressing the foreign community with last year's suggestions to the city.
Regarding the reckless motorcycle drivers who disrupt traffic in the city or drive on sidewalks the city says it is spending money for safety campaigns in the media.
Specifically radio campaigns have been airing twice a day on major Korean networks since April 1st and a 40 second public aid is set to run on TV starting mid May.
Looking at the number of foreigner inquiries received at city hall last year ''immigration and visa'' topped the list with ''tour'' and ''civil affairs'' following.
''Immigration and visa'' is believed to be the number one inquiry as the number of foreign workers sharply rise every year.
In the free discussion session foreigners told city officials what was on their minds.
''This year in particular I'd like to see the transportation system issues addressed.''
Although many foreigners praised the capital's efficient public transportation system they said difficulty in communication with taxi and bus drivers along with reckless drivers to be the problem.
Seoul city hall gave a presentation on how they are working to help the expat community.
''We are operating a 24-hour service to help foreigners who might get sick in the middle of the night find a hospital with English speaking staff through our Medical Reference Service and we opened the Yongsan International School last year to help the foreign community educate their children.''
Foreigners expressed satisfaction in the annual town meeting and thanked city hall for trying to accommodate them as part of the city.
