Bolivian security forces say they foiled an assassination plot against President Evo Morales killing three in a gunfight at a hotel in the city of Santa Cruz Thursday.
The police chief says two of them were Hungarian and the other Bolivian but several local media reports say they were from Romania or Ireland.
Two others involved in the plot are reportedly under arrest.
While the shootout occurred the Bolivian president was in Venezuela for a summit.
Speaking from Venezuela he said that the mercenaries were planning to kill him and Vice President Alvaro Garcia.
Morales‚ being the first indigenous president of the country‚ has faced strong opposition from wealthy regions with Santa Cruz being one of the strongholds.
