요약정보
Investors in Korea are turning to the Middle East and Africa in search of high-yielding funds in oil-rich nations there.
Yoo Jihae tells us experts are advising investors to take caution.
Amidst growing concerns over the continuous capital drain from foreign investment funds last year‚ Korean investors are shifting its their interest to Middle Eastern and African countries in pursuit of higher and more stable returns.
The two oil-abundant regions may be smaller and not as well researched compared to the BRICs nations that is‚ the developing economies of Brazil‚ Russia‚ India and China‚ but big funds here are brimming with anticipation over the regions' outstanding growth potential.
Middle Eastern and African economies are showing competitiveness against BRICs economies‚ which have recently experienced sharp losses hurting short-term returns.
Fund assessment company‚ Zeroin‚ said Wednesday that despite the fact that three months yields on all foreign investment funds stood at minus levels‚ Middle Eastern and African funds stood at minus 11 percent.
Zeroin says that is a reasonable drop compared to the total average of minus 15 percent.
Several heavyweight firms have already launched funds such as Samsung Fund‚ which is set to sell its ''Samsung Arabian Fund'' from Thursday through Samsung Securities.
Samsung is trying to take advantage of reasonable stock prices for funds investing in those regions as well as the regions' independence from recent global financial woes and break-neck competition for emerging market funds.
But some experts warn that it may be too soon to tell whether the two regions will live up to their high growth potential and cite market immaturity to cast doubt on short-term gains from investments there.
Funds investing in Middle Eastern and African regions are surely drawing attention to the rosy outlook‚ but with the volatile market situation and ongoing fear of world economic recession how long the positive outlook will last is anyone's question.
