A tsunami triggered by a powerful earthquake has left hundreds of people dead and injured on the central Indonesian island of Java.
The Indonesian Red Cross disaster center reported that at least 127 people have been listed as missing while adding that several thousands of people left their homes to flee to safe places.
As rescue works are underway on Java island the casualty toll is expected to rise.
"The search for people who may have been swept away by this tsunami is continuing. Because of this‚ an accurate report of the total number of people dead or even injured cannot be calculated."
A 7.7 magnitude undersea earthquake struck off the resort town of Pangandaran Monday afternoon and caused two-meter high waves.
The aftershock flattened houses and buildings and also damaged hundreds of fishing boats.
This was the latest in a series of powerful earthquakes to hit Indonesia.
In late May Java was hit by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake that killed around 6-thousand people and injured thousands of others.
In December 2004 a massive tsunami in the Indian Ocean killed more than 200-thousand people in the region nearly half of them in Indonesia.
