[Reporter : ] Hi guys. Don't we all turn on the computer or look into our smartphones first thing whenever you want to know about something
Korea is a "ubiquitous" society that provides access to online information any time and anywhere.
The Internet is a vast sea of information that seems to hold the answers to all of life's questions.
Koreans enjoy the highest distribution levels of Internet access among OECD countries.
90% of Koreans have wireless internet‚ roughly double the OECD average.
In addition‚ Korea now has 200 million smartphone users!
The speed and way in which information is processed in everyday life are changing.
[Interview : ] "Sometimes‚ I use the Internet all day. The Internet is such a big part of my life that when I can't use it‚ I feel very inconvenienced and lacking."
[Interview : ] "The Internet gives you quick and easy access to a vast amount of information."
However‚ there are certain dangers lurking in the deluge of quick and easy information.
Opinions of non-specialists and unsubstantiated claims float around as if they were facts.
[Interview : ] "I once received a low grade on a report because I used the wrong information from the Internet."
[Interview : ] "Private academies hire people to promote them online. I once went to a private academy that had been highly recommended online‚ but it was very different from what I had read."
This person had trouble paying all of his bills on time‚ and his cell phone bill was especially worrying each month.
One day‚ he read online that his credit rating would be unaffected even if he began to push back his cell phone bill payments. Each month‚ his cell phone bill slowly snowballed.
This misinformation destroyed his credit.
One day‚ this woman suddenly collapsed.
Her body had been ravaged by the so-called "painkiller diet" that had become a fad online. Advocates had claimed that taking five pills a day would help her immediately drop several kilograms.
However‚ there is no possible legal redress.
[Interview : Jeong Jin‚ Attorney
Joyul Law Firm] "It is impossible to legally punish ordinary online speech. It can be punished if it involves slander or libel‚ but simple misinformation is not a crime‚ and cannot be subject to damage fines."
The most serious type of online misinformation concerns medical conditions and treatments.
According to one university survey‚ Koreans turn to the Internet the most for medical information and advice.
The Internet's anonymity is another appealing factor for patients.
[Interview : Seong Hong-nak‚ Director
Korean Association of Obstetricians & Gynecologists] "When people are sick‚ they become easily convinced when they see solutions that fit their own preconceptions or desires. They hear at the hospital that a certain kind of treatment is not recommended‚ and then they read on the Internet that that treatment is perfect for them. Sometimes‚ non-licensed doctors earn lots of money by selling medicine online. Sick people can easily become victims."
To stop the flow of wrong information online‚ doctors have begun to answer online questions themselves and offer free advice.
The Korean Association of Obsstreticians and Gynecologists have even released a smartphone application that offers 1:1 online consultations with a doctor.
