At a convention center in Seoul‚ a very special event is taking place.
It is none other than the Nail Expo‚ the biggest nail art exhibition in Korea.
From illustrations to acrylics to 3D art‚ The amazing works on display
are simply jaw dropping.

Nail art originated in 3000 BC when Chinese and Egyptian aristocrats began decorating their nails.
5000 years down the road‚ nail art is more popular than ever in both the East and West!
Nail art was first introduced to Korea 20 years ago.
Some say nail art is popular in Korea because Koreans care deeply
about how they appear to others.
[Interview : Baek Hyo-jeong‚ Visitor] "I think manicured hands give the impression that I am neat and well groomed‚ so I get manicures from time to time."
This is the 7th Nail Expo‚ and as always‚ there is one event everyone is looking forward to.
It is the Nail Art contest to pick the best nail artist in Korea!
A total of 769 contestants will be vying for this prized trophy. It must be nerve wracking even for the most seasoned professionals.
[Interview : Shin So-hui‚ Contestant] "I am so nervous right now‚ it feels like I'm getting gastritis!"
The time limit is 75 minutes! Within this time‚ the contestants have to create a harmonious set of 5 fingernails. They will be judged at various points in the competition.
To be fair‚ the judging is done through a blind test.
After the deliberation of experts from around the world‚ the winner is crowned.
Winning at this contest is a great honor for all Korean nail artists.
[Interview : Shin Sang-eun‚ Winner] "I wasn't expecting this at all. I am very happy and grateful to receive such a huge award at my first competition."
World famous nail artist‚ Miki Yamamoto is also here at the nail expo.
She says that it was natural that the Korean nail art industry was able to reach such a high standard in such a short time.

Japan] "I think nail art is popular in Korea because Korean women are very interested in dressing up and looking good."
Free manicures[Interview : Park Ju-hui‚ Visitor] "This is my first time at the Nail Expo. It's great because you can receive free manicures and nail art services."
The next destination is a manicure shop run by Choi Su-ji‚ who boasts 15 years in nail art!
From delightful cartoon characters‚
to intricate designs and patterns‚
every nail is a masterpiece from
her very able hands.
It's of no surprise that her co-workers are always
full of praise.
[Interview : Jin Yu-ri‚ Employee of a manicure shop] "She is very skillful‚ and her speed is beyond compare."

Speed is not her only specialty. She can create new worlds in the tiny space of a fingernail.

Nail shops invite customers of all walks of life. Sometimes‚ their nails
are in less than perfect shape.
[Interview : Choi Su-ji‚ Nail artist ] "I see her nails are weak‚ easily torn and the layers are coming apart. It's no problem‚ though."
Do you have the habit of biting your nails
They look so much better now.
Next comes the polish and then the decorations and they're done!
It's truly an incredible transformation.
[Interview : Jeon Hye-jin‚ Customer] "I was worried at first because my nails were in very bad shape but the end result is great. I am very happy with my nails now."
Choi Su-ji says she can paint anything and everything on
a fingernail. Time to put her to the test!

[Interview : PD] "Do you think you can do it[Interview : Choi Su-ji] "Yes. It is possible."
Without hesitation‚ she begins her task. And amazingly‚
she can paint intricate flags
without even a rough sketch.
