요약정보
More and more buildings in Seoul have that sleek‚ futuristic look thanks to their glass facades.
But the downside to these buildings is that they are not energy efficient‚ which can be a burden in these times of high energy prices.
Kim Jiyoung tells us where the problem is and what can be done about it.
A growing number of high-rise office buildings dotting the capital Seoul these days have one thing in common: glass and lots of it.
They may look great from the outside but they're awful from an energy standpoint especially in the summer.
[INTERVIEW : Gweon Woonhak‚Office Worker] ''The sunlight comes through the glass windows and hits everything. It's really hot even though we keep the air-conditioner turned on.''
A team of researchers compared the energy efficiency levels of these glass buildings to conventional‚ concrete ones.
Room temperatures in two rooms were set at minus 10-degrees Celsius and a temperature-sensitive camera recorded the changes.
The concrete wall appears red meaning the heat is kept outside the room.
But the glass wall turns blue meaning the heat passed right through it.
Experts say ordinary glass walls waste six times more energy than concrete walls.
[INTERVIEW : Kang Jaesik‚ Researcher‚Korea Inst. of Construction Technology] ''With glass walls‚ more energy is spent to keep the temperature at a certain level. And this leads to higher costs for people who work or live in these buildings.''
This type of construction is known in the industry as ''glass curtain walls.''
And buildings made using this method have become increasingly popular in Korea due to their shorter construction time and eye-catching exteriors.
Take the cutting-edge Digital Media Center in western Seoul‚ where 21 out of 22 buildings have been built using glass curtain walls.
Experts say the best thing to do is to use more advanced versions of glass curtain walls that are more energy efficient.
Or turn to the good old-fashioned way of keeping the shades down.
