On behalf of the people and the Government of the Republic of Korea‚ I would like to extend my deep gratitude to all the guests attending this ceremony today to celebrate the opening of the new building of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the United Arab Emirates. My heartfelt thanks go to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan‚ Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces‚ who so graciously offered this extensive Embassy site free of charge.
Distinguished Guests‚
There have indeed been remarkable advances in the relations between the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Korea since the two countries established diplomatic ties in June 1980. The relationship‚ which started in the areas of construction and oil‚ has developed into a Strategic Partnership since Korea signed a contract in December 2009 for the construction of nuclear power plants in the UAE. The ROK-UAE ties now encompass a whole range of fields including nuclear power‚ education‚ health‚ and science and technology.
There are approximately 170 Korean companies and 12‚000 Korean people in the UAE. As good friends of the Emirati people‚ they are working together with corporations and people of the UAE to build a win-win relationship.
The number of Emirati people who visit Korea is also increasing every year. Last year‚ more than 10‚000 Emiratis visited Korea and this in fact represents the greatest number of all Middle Eastern countries. Among those who visited Korea last year‚ about 2‚000 patients and their family members came to Korea for medical treatment. In addition‚ about 40 UAE　university students visit Korea every year as part of the Youth Ambassadors Program. They have opportunities to gain an even deeper understanding of Korea through visits to industrial sites in Korea and by forming bonds of friendship with Korean students.
Indeed‚ Korean President Park Geun-hye paid a visit to the United Arab Emirates last May‚ marking her first visit to a country of the Middle East. This does indeed clearly demonstrate the great importance that the Republic of Korea places on the relations with the United Arab Emirates. Furthermore‚ His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan‚ Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi has visited Korea four times since 2006. It is my sincere hope that there will indeed be even more thriving exchanges in the years ahead.
More broadly‚ I look forward to the two countries indeed further fostering the close ties and strengthening the Strategic Partnership as we step forward into another 100 years of our strong ties of cooperation.
Ladies and Gentlemen‚
I would like to bring my remarks to a close by expressing my deep appreciation to Ambassador Kwon Hae-ryong and all the staff of the Korean Embassy in the United Arab Emirates for all their hard work in organizing today’s ceremony and expressing the sincere hope that the Korean Embassy in the UAE‚ which has now built a new nest‚ will continue to play an invaluable role as an outpost for the further development and deepening of the relations between the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Korea.
