요약정보
Earlier this year‚ roughly 80 South Koreans were reunited with their North Korean family members after being separated for more than 60 years.
But those yearning for a chance to meet with their long-lost loved ones are not just in Korea.
Our Yim Yoonhee joins us for this.
That's right.
After the Korean War‚ many people immigrated to the United States.
Though they've lived thousands of miles away for decades‚ they haven't forgotten the family members they were forced to part from in North Korea.
Now there's a documentary hoping to bring awareness to this issue.
Take a look.
Decades after their separation‚ these sisters are still unable to hold back their tears‚ as they sing a tribute to their long lost brother‚ a brother they were forced to leave behind in North Korea. Their story is same as an estimated 100-thousand other first-generation Korean-Americans who were separated from their families as a result of the Korean War.
Because the U.S. has no political ties with North Korea‚ contact has been impossible‚ leaving families wondering if their lost family members are even still alive.
Now in their 70s and 80s‚ most are left wondering if they'll ever get an answer.
For the past five years‚ a team of Korean-Americans have worked together to produced a documentary aimed at bringing awareness to this issue‚ as well as rallying support for a reunion between these families.
Through interviews and meetings‚ second-generation Korean-Americans Jason Ahn and Eugene Chung uncover the heartbreak and burden these family members have endured‚ now grandmothers and grandfathers who are hoping that some day‚ they'll be able to see the faces of their beloved family members once again.
The documentary is 50 minutes long‚ but goes in depth with three of the 100-thousand who were separated on the Korean peninsula‚ shedding light on the pain of a divided family.
This film has been screened at various locations around the U.S.‚ including the U.S. Congress‚ Harvard University‚ and at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies in Seoul.
With each screening‚ the team hopes to bring resolution H.Con.Res.91 (House Concurrent Resolution 91) into effect‚ which will potentially open opportunities for separated family members to be reunited.
That's a very emotional documentary with big ambitions.
Tell us more about the progress it's made in terms of political results.
The House of Congress Resolution 91 was introduced to a congressional committee on March 6th of this year.
It "encourages the reunions of Korean-Americans who were divided by the Korean War from their relatives in North Korea" and ultimately asks Pyongyang to allow such reunions.
And for those who want to watch the documentary‚ it is available on YouTube‚ right?
Yes‚ the documentary debuted on YouTube yesterday.
And will continue to be available there as well as on their website.
They are encouraging people to watch it because they want as many people as possible to be aware of this issue.
The directors believe that if enough people watch this documentary‚ and see the heartbreak of these families‚ then meetings can be arranged in the near future.
Well here in Korea‚ there was a reunion in February of families separated from their loved ones in the North.
And President Park has been pushing for more.
Right‚ she has been very supportive of creating means of reuniting separated families.
Earlier this year‚ in February‚ after many hurdles‚ a reunion between roughly 82 South Koreans and 180 North Koreans took place.
This is the kind of result the team behind this film is hoping to achieve.
Thank you for that report.
Always a pleasure.
