As the long weekend kicked yesterday‚ so too did the Jeonju International Film Festival‚ the long-standing home of independent Korean cinema‚ which is going into its 15th edition this year.
Known for programming the best in world arthouse cinema and for discovering some of the future bright lights of local cinema‚ Jeonju is one of Korea’s top annual destinations for film lovers.
As with many cultural events following the Sewol-ho ferry disaster‚ this year’s festivities have been scaled down to pay respects to the victims of the ferry capsize.
Yet the festival is still offering a broad and exciting program filled with cinematic treasures.
Our film critic Pierce Conran is on the ground in Korea's southwestern city of Jeonju covering the festival.
He joins us live via Skype.
Hello there Pierce. It's great to see you down there.
Now‚ for those not too familiar with the Jeonju International Film Festival‚ can you tell us a little about the event?
Jeonju is one of the top three festivals in Korea‚ and specializes in independent cinema. In addition to programming art films from around the world‚ the film commissions a number of small projects every year.
This year’s edition runs from May 1-10 and features many guest visits and master classes‚ in addition to the many films on offer.
Jeonju is already in its 15th edition. How is this year different from the previous years?
Jeonju is already known for its Jeonju Digital Project‚ which invites three top world cinema directors to make short films for about $50‚000 and a similar Short Short Short program‚ which showcases short films from emerging Korean filmmakers.
These have been merged to produced three full-length features. Also‚ following some criticism last year‚ the programming seems a little different this year‚ concentrating on discovering and promoting exciting new indie films.
All right. What are some of the big films that festivalgoers are excited about this year?
The opening film is an omnibus with segments directed by famed Korean helmers RYU Seung-wan and KIM Tae-yong.
As a 3D film and with such big names involved‚ many are curious.
The same could be said of the Jeonju Digital Project features‚ particularly those from local filmmakers.
PARK Jung-bum‚ following his stellar Journals of Musan‚ presents Alive‚ shot in Kangwon province. SHIN Yeong-shick will present The Avian Kind‚ which expands on an idea from The Russian Novel‚ one of his previous films.
Well‚ many if not all festivities and celebrations have been toned down here in Korea‚ of course‚ paying tribute to the victims of the recent ferry tragedy in the nation.
I'm sure the Jeonju film festival was also affected by it?
The festival team clearly seems devastated by the event and the schedule has changed as a result. In order to pay their respects‚ all the red carpets galas‚ music events and parties/receptions have been cancelled. Given that the festival is their livelihood‚ they’ve made a big effort to honor the victims.
Now‚ Pierce Korea is well known for big name festivals - such as the Busan Int'l film festival and PiFan. What would you say sets Jeonju apart from the others?
Busan is often dubbed the Cannes of Asia. While an impressive event‚ with so many films ‚ it’s hard to discern a special flavor and it can be overwhelming.
Jeonju is focused on indie films‚ many with social themes‚ and the ambience is far more intimate and manageable.
PiFan has a similar scale‚ but focuses on genre films so it draws a similarly dedicated‚ but very different crowd.
How important is a festival like Jeonju for the local film industry?
