요약정보
Generation gaps may occur in every country and era.And here in Korea today's K-pop infused youth probably doesn't share much in common with the youth of the Korean war.
However these differences in mindsets expectations and lifestyles have parts of Korean society straining particularly in the field of employment.Ji Myung-kil joins us to talk about the nation's expanding generation gap.
{Ji Myung-kil ‚ mkji@arirang.co.kr}
Good evening.
The gulf between young Koreans and their parents is as wide now as it has ever been. This generation gap was there for everyone to see in last month's presidential election when Koreans in their 20s and 30s voted overwhelming in favor of the liberal party while those in their 50s and 60s turned out heavily for the conservative party.
Koreans on both sides of the gap are becoming more concerned about the issue.
{Hahm Seong-yong(29)}
"I'm in my 20s and personally I think there is a huge difference between the mindsets of the younger and older generations. The older generation struggled and worked hard to reconstruct the country after the Korean War and they made a huge contribution to society.
On the other hand‚ we are extremely concerned about finding a job‚we always strive to stay competitive in the hope of finding a good job."
{Lee Sung-kook(63)}
"The younger generations are very good at expressing themselves but sometimes I wish they would take more time to think before they make decisions or speak out."
Korea's official unemployment rate of 2.9 percent presents a rosy picture but the nation's youth unemployment rate is about 7.5 percent. What's going on?
Well‚ experts say there are jobs out there for young people‚ but Koreans in their 20s are all looking to find high-paying‚ professional jobs at large companies and the supply is much larger than demand.
They say the employment rate for people in their 50s and 60s is on the rise as they are opening businesses to secure an income‚ pay their children's tuition fees and pay off debts.
{Kim Sun-bin‚ Research Fellow of Economic Policy
Samsung Economic Research Institute}
"Korea's population is aging. Therefore‚ more people in their 50s and 60s are still working.
People in their 20s‚ who have received a better education than their parents‚ are looking for better quality jobs that are in short supply."
So what needs to happen if we want to get these young people into jobs?Experts say actual job experience is what they need as most students in Korea don't build up the valuable experience of working while they are studying at college.
{Kim Yong-seong‚ Research Fellow of Public Finance & Social Policy
Korea Development Institute}
"The government needs to subsidize employees' wages so companies can take young people on more cheaply.
They should also encourage young people to startup new ventures and teach them good management skills."
As you mentioned jobs are out there but young people have different ideas these days of what they would like to spend their lives doing.
Well‚ Koreans over the age of 50 have traditionally been so-called "bread-winners."
They left home early in the morning and came home late at night. So their priority was securing enough food for their families. The younger generation are more focused on their own self-interests and doing something different.
{Choi Sung-aie‚ Certified Gottman Therapist HD Family Center}
"Well‚ for example for parents their favorite jobs for the children are teachers‚ government officials‚ doctors and lawyers‚ if possible. But for the children those are boring jobs because its tedious and there is not much change and excitement.
So if they say they would like to become a newscaster or a news reporter or artist or painter or something very different from what their parents did not experience then they would have high anxiety for the security and the childrens future
