요약정보
The Chungcheong region is coveted territory in this election‚ as it is a traditional swing vote region and has the special distinction of having been won by all former democratically elected presidents.
Park kicked off her campaign in Sejong City‚ a new administrative district in the region that Park fought to maintain when the plan to build the city was about to be scrapped.
At a campaign stop late Tuesday in North Jeolla‚ Park promised to help the country overcome the regionalism that has often been divisive.
[Interview : Park Geun-hye‚ Presidential Candidate
Saenuri Party] "I will not divide the forces of democratization and industrialization. I will work to bring the two forces together to make a new Korea."
Moon is campaigning in Chungcheong on Wednesday‚ with planned stops in Daejeon‚ Sejong City and other key cities.
But Chungcheong isn't the only prize in this election.
The other southern swing regions of Busan‚ Ulsan and South Gyeongsang Province are also up for grabs.
This area used to be the ruling party's stronghold‚ but ever since the late President Roh Moo-hyun of the liberal camp won election with more than 30 percent support from there‚ the ruling camp can no longer assume automatic support in the region.
Moon‚ who was born in South Gyeongsang and worked as a lawyer in Busan‚ kicked off his campaign in the southern port city on Tuesday‚ when he made an unexpected promise about future elections.
[Interview : Moon Jae-in‚ Presidential Candidate
Democratic United Party] "I will promise you one more thing. I will implement a two-round voting system for the presidential election so that voters can elect the candidates."
Candidates are currently nominated by parties‚ not citizens.
Under the two-round system‚ it's the other way around.
Citizens vote for their chosen candidate‚ but if none of the candidates receives a majority of the vote‚ then the top two candidates with the most votes go through a second round of voting.
This is the system in France‚ and Moon believes that using it for presidential elections in Korea would shift the burden of choosing a candidate from the candidates themselves to the voters and eliminating the need for campaign mergers such as the one he went through with independent Ahn Cheol-soo‚ who dropped out of the race last week.
