Over the past few months‚ the market for imported cosmetics has taken a hit as a result of the global financial crisis‚ but for the most part‚ the market has grown in recent years‚ largely because the people who buy these products have remained loyal to their brands.

] "Korean women tend to prefer brand-name products‚ especially cosmetics‚ because it makes us seem like we can easily afford those items. That's one of the reasons why imported cosmetics continue to sell out in Korea."
In addition to demand for over-priced cosmetics‚ the surging number of plastic surgery procedures in recent years is another indicator of Korea's appearance oriented society.
According to a report by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery‚ Korea topped the list in 2010‚ followed by countries like Greece and Italy.
So why is it that Koreans are‚ or have become‚ so appearance oriented[Interview : Kang Jin-joo‚ Head Director
Personal Image Clinic] "Before the 1997 Asian financial crisis‚ any man or woman with the right skill sets were able to succeed in life to some degree. But since the crisis there was rapid economic industrialization‚ and then came the time where more was required from those who wanted to succeed. So image-making was one of the key ways to get a competitive edge over others."
Other experts have cited the Confucianism philosophy that is deeply embedded in Korea‚ which has to do with the way people should behave within the society they form.
The philosophy is what pushes Korea‚ as a closely knit society‚ to being very aware of how they appear to others.
They said economic changes that led to fierce competition were also an added incentive for Koreans to invest more in their looks.
