요약정보
A North Korean fighter jet reportedly flew near South Korea's Ganghwa Island off the country's west coast for more than an HOUR on Tuesday.
Voice of America reported that after spotting the jets‚ South Korea's air force flew TEN sorties consisting of F-16 and F-5 fighters to monitor the North Korean jet.
South Korean military officials‚ however‚ said that it's not unusual to see North Korean fighter jets flying near the Tactical Action Line or TAL.
In fact‚ recent reports indicate that the number of North Korean sorties has gone up significantly since May with some of them flying close to South Korea's airspace.
The TAL is an imaginary line set by the South about 20 to 30 kilometers north of the Demilitarized Zone and the Northern Limit Line in the West Sea‚ based on the assumption that North Korean fighter jets can attack the Seoul metropolitan area within minutes after take-off.
Once they fly close to this line‚ South Korean fighter jets are required to take action.
Officials believe the increased North Korean flights appear to be part of routine exercises.
While North Korea is threatening South Korean airspace by flying more sorties‚ a recent survey done by Samsung Economic Research Institute says that experts on inter-Korea relations believe that the security situation on the Korean Peninsula has deteriorated in the second quarter of this year.
Experts from Korea‚ the United States‚ Japan‚ China and Russia believe the security situation on the peninsula is as bad now as it was in 2006 when North Korean conducted its first nuclear test.
They attributed the worsened security situation to North Korea's failed rocket launch and its continued threats to rage war on the South.
