The Seoul Lantern Festival is held every November in the Cheonggye Stream area. This year‚ it takes place from the 4th to the 20th. Various lanterns are featured around the theme "Old Memories of Seoul." Some lanterns portray the lives of Korean ancestors‚ like the palanquins brides rode to their weddings.

The festival not only displays Korean lanterns but also ones that represent 20 different countries. The vicious demon of Japan‚ the Statue of Liberty of the USA‚ and the Filipino lantern made with shells create an exotic sight.

But there is one particular lantern among the 30‚000 that impresses the visitors the most.

It's the peacock lantern! Visitors stand in awe as it flaps the wings and spews fire.

The colorful lanterns create a picturesque scene at Cheonggye Stream. The stream is a place to rest and a venue for exciting events for many Seoul citizens.

Cheonggye Stream is the most beloved place among Seoul citizens. It hasn't been long‚ however‚ since it looked as it does today. Cheonggye Stream has a long history of being the main artery of Seoul. People built their houses around the stream in the past.
[Interview : Kim Il-jin‚ Visitor] "The Cheonggye Stream used to be a bit wider in the past. At the time‚ both sides of the stream were lined with shacks."
As the Seoul population grew‚ Cheonggye Stream was replaced by paved roads in 1959. In 2005‚ however‚ due to popular demand for a resting place in the city‚ it was restored to its current state.
Currently‚ the number of visitors averages around over 40‚000 each day.

Charm No. 1 of the restored Cheonggye Stream is that it preserves nature in its purest form.
