After travelling two-and-a-half hours by ferry from Korea's Mukho harbor at Donghae‚ Gangwon Province‚ visitors arrived on Ulleung Island to see which well-tuned athlete would win one of the world’s most grueling sporting events.
On Saturday‚ the International Ulleungdo-Dokdo Triathlon 2011 took place‚… ahead of Korea's Liberation Day on August 15th.
[Interview : Chun Byoung-keuk‚ Director of Sports Bureau
Ministry of Culture‚ Sports & Tourism] "There are debates on Dokdo‚ but one of the purposes of this race is to give the firm impression to the world that Dokdo definitely belongs to Korea."
This year a total of 1-hundred-12 triathletes took part in the competition‚ which also drew some international competitors as well.
[Interview : Brad Williams‚ Participant from US] "This morning I feel pretty good about the race. I've got my morning routine done. It's my first time to Ulleungdo so I'm looking forward to seeing the island‚ and looks like there's gonna be some strong competition today with Park Byung-hoon being here and Kim Ji-hwan and I think it's gonna be a fast race so we'll see how it goes."
One by one‚ they jumped into the water to get ready for the two-kilometer swim.
With the sound of the siren‚ they took off into the East Sea.
And as the participants swam away from shore‚ there was simply no time to waste… to get a good start in the three-sport event.
Following the swim‚ they quickly switched gears… and headed over to their bikes.
56-year-old Korean Kim Sang-taek was diagnosed with stomach cancer…and had surgery to treat it just two years ago.
But that didn't stop him from competing… as he tries to live his life to the fullest.
[Interview : Kim Sang-taek‚ Participant battling cancer] "I'm feeling pretty good right now. If anything like this happens‚ when you love even the smallest form of exercise and enjoy yourself‚ then I can confidently say you can overcome any type of disease."
After pedaling 40 kilometers along the shoreline‚ they dropped their bikes for the final stage‚… the marathon.
All that stood between the athletes now and the finish line… was the 10-kilometer run.
And the winner of this year's competition was 22-year-old Korean Kim Ji-hwan‚ who was crowned the ironman champion for the second year in a row.
[Interview : Kim Ji-hwan‚ Winner] "Keeping the momentum from last year's victory‚ it feels great to win again. Being part of another race here on Ulleung Island with the great scenery and clear waters makes me feel deeply touched."
Meanwhile‚ the first 33 participants to complete the event on Ulleung were honored with the chance to travel another two-and-a-half hours by ferry… to swim a quick lap around the Dokdo islets.
[Interview : Kim Han-ul
chkim@arirang.co.kr] "The 33 chosen participants swam around Dokdo as a symbolic gesture to raise awareness over Korea's control of the islets.
