요약정보
The Korean government banned a group of Japanese lawmakers from entering the country via Gimpo International Airport.
Three members of the main opposition Liberal Democratic Party of Japan were widely expected to make ownership claims over the Korea-controlled Dokdo islets during their planned visit to Ulleung Island in the East Sea.
After demanding for nearly nine hours that the Korean government explain the entry ban‚ the group finally agreed to board the last flight to Tokyo just after 8 p.m. Monday night‚ while vowing to reattempt the trip to Ulleung.
This comes after an extreme right-wing Japanese professor's attempt on Sunday to pass through immigration at Incheon International Airport‚ which failed.
Seoul says there is no issue to settle since the islets are historically‚ geographically‚ and by international law Korean territory and that the entry ban was carried out on legal grounds.
The Korean government's stance on the latest measure garnered bipartisan support at the National Assembly.
The ruling Grand National Party has called the attempted visit a clear territorial aggression‚ adding that it has left yet another wound in Korea's history only two weeks ahead of the 66th anniversary of the end of Japan's colonial rule.
And the opposition Democratic Party cautioned that the government should act firmly saying the Japanese group's main goal is to highlight the entry ban.
Hundreds of angry Korean citizens also gathered outside the airport to protest the Japanese legislators' move‚ demanding Tokyo to apologize.
Meanwhile‚ the Japanese government is expected to continue making territorial claims with its annual defense white paper likely to be published as early as Tuesday.
Last year‚ Tokyo said the issue surrounding Dokdo remains unresolved.
